Annabel re­mem­bers at five years old be­ing in­tro­duced to the won­der of bak­ing. “Mum was mak­ing meringues, beat­ing the egg whites and sugar, and it went from this gloop to this magic, pil­lowy cloud. I can al­most vis­cer­ally re­mem­ber it. There was this po­tent sense of suc­cess over some­thing as sim­ple as eggs and sugar, or flour and but­ter. You could make other peo­ple happy and you could make your­self happy. I’ve al­ways known that from a very young age. If I ever felt out of sorts with the world, I would cook.”
