There’s been much debate over types of sunscreen and their benefits. The top line is that you don’t need to know anything other than it’s imperative to wear it – and any is better than none. If you want to know more, most products fall into one of two camps. “Sunscreen ingredients are divided into chemical absorbers or physical blockers,” says dermatologist Dr Eleni Yiasemides. “Chemical absorbers absorb the UV radiation from the sun whereas physical blockers reflect the UV rays.” Physical blockers are generally created with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide and often have a whiter appearance on the skin. If you see other ingredients listed, they are usually chemical absorbers. Both types are widely available and provide good sun protection. Sometimes a combination is used to create a product that spreads easily and is absorbed well. For sensitive skin, a zinc-based cream is generally tolerated better.
