A walk in the park

-

On Foot Holidays has four, five, six and seven-night walks in Portugal, priced from around NZ$1100 for four nights and

from NZ$1500 for seven, including bed and breakfast, packed lunches and luggage transfers daily. The 2020 season starts on April 15 and finishes on October 23, excluding late July and all of August. More at

START IN STYLE

Porto is the usual pick-up point for international visitors. Spend

two or three days here and don’t leave without walking on the top deck of the Dom Luís I Bridge (reserved for trams and

pedestrians) over the River Douro. It’s free and it’s awesome.

FINISH WITH A FLOURISH

Braga is just 30km from the

final hotel on the hike, the Mosteiro de Amares, and is well worth a stay (my nephews liked it more than Porto, Lisbon and

Madrid). Save half a day at least for the hillside sanctuary Bom Jesus do Monte and a full day for Guimarães’ historic city centre (25km from Braga). Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites.
