5 minute philosopher

Dancing with the Stars NZ contestant Brodie Kane ponders the big questions.

-

What is the meaning of life? Please don’t hold it against me if I’m wrong because this seems like a pretty deep question, but I would say making the most of each day you have, surrounding yourself with good people and giving everything a crack. Is it more important to be liked or respected?

Respected, absolutely. You simply cannot expect everyone to like you – it’s just not how it works and that’s absolutely fine.

What is your greatest fear?

Spiders. Oh, man, I’m terrible. I ripped a clump of hair out of my scalp when a spider was on my head once and I’ve also gone to stay with mates one night when there was a spider in my room. I really wish I wasn’t so scared, but there we are. I’m not a fan of cockroaches, rats or snakes either. I’d just like them all to respect my personal space!

Does the supernatural exist?

I reckon! I mean, I don’t think about it too much, but I reckon there are ghosts cruising around with us.

What have you never understood?

Why do flies keep landing on us? Like, they are so small, then they land and a giant limb comes hurtling towards them, so they fly away. Then they go risk their lives with the giant limb all over again!

When did you last cry?

When I said goodbye to my family and dog Connor after leaving Christchurch to move back to Auckland. Some good sobbing there!

What lesson has been the hardest to learn?

Self-acceptance. I feel like it comes with more time on the ground, you know? It’s about learning to be proud of who you are, finding the ways you’re open to improving and being the best version of yourself, but also accepting that you can go home at the end of the day, take your bra off, put your trackies on and watch Netflix for hours

– all of that!

How do you stay motivated?

I like pushing myself, challenging myself and making the most of life. It keeps things exciting!

Whose wardrobe would you like to raid?

If I could raid a Caitlin Crisp store, I’d be very pleased.
