Schools’ dreams com­ing true with com­pe­ti­tion win

Bay News - - AROUND TOWN - St Thomas More Catholic School’s prize money will go to­wards grow­ing food for Tau­ranga Food­bank.

Three schools’ dreams have come true.

Bay­fair Shop­ping Cen­tre re­cently ran a com­pe­ti­tion with a com­mu­nity edge.

Dur­ing Au­gust 27-Septem­ber 7, shop­pers who spent $20 were able to vote for the coastal school of their choice and prize money would go to­wards school ini­tia­tives.

The most voted for school was Te Kura o Mat­apihi which won $5000.

The ru­ral school’s wish was to use prize money to go to­wards new mu­sic equip­ment the stu­dents, their per­form­ing arts, drama and plays.

Sec­ond prize of $3000 went to St Thomas More Catholic School which plans on us­ing the money to­wards their Gar­den­ing Club and plant­ing more trees.

The school will ex­tend their veg­etable gar­dens to grow food for Tau­ranga Food­bank while teach­ing the chil­dren about help­ing those in need and sus­tain­abil­ity.

The third prize of $1000 went to Arataki School which plans to spend the money on new sports uni­forms and equip­ment.

Te Kura o Mat­apihi stu­dents will use their $5000 wind­fall for new mu­sic equip­ment.
