Cyber jazz released

Bay News - - HELLO WORLD -

LIAM Ryan has partneredwith band man Rodger Fox to release an electro jazz track this week.

Caribbean Cruise features Tauranga’s Liam Ryan on Rhodes piano, Moog synth and programming, with Rodger on trombone and Steve Garden from Rattle Records on drums. The track was released online through Torch Music.

It pays homage to the Caribbean and to the local juke box/ bar in suburban Christchurchwhere Liam grew up in the late 1960s.

“It was a classic New Zealand suburban 60smilk bar— the Church corner hangout for the Villa Maria girls after school. It was action packed— and had the best juke box in the area. Caribbean Cruise was a jam piece Iwrotewhile in Christchurch band NightMusique in the 1970s, but sadly the band never recorded it.”

Liam is keyboardist with The Narcs and is gigging with The Midge Marsden Band and his own electro-jazz unit The Blue Riders.

The project came together at Liam’s Waihi Anam Cara studio and Steve’s Mt Eden Garden Shed studio. Rodger’s trombone was recorded at Studio 11B in Mount Maunganui. The track was mastered byMike Beever in Nelson.

“One of the joys of the internet is being able to live in the provinces and still play with great players,” says Liam. The rule was simple—‘one take only’ — apart from some tweaking of electronic samples the piece pretty much wrote itself. A kind of cyber-jazz.”

Caribbean Cruise is one of four pieces Liam will release as an EP early next year.
