Gardening is a great activity for kids and it’s good to see more young people giving it a go.

Declan Lang has taken the pastime one step further by being named the joint Central North Island Yates Budding Young Gardener winner.

Now the 13-year-old is in the running to take out the inaugural NZ title and hopes to forge a career that will encompass his love of nature.

By my own admission I have only just started to get going in the garden. Last week I planted out an array of vegetables including tomatoes, peppers, spinach and lettuce. Like Declan I enjoy watching things grow and it’s even better when you get to eat them.

I don’t have a big garden but I’ve taken advantage of using big pots and it’s quite amazing what you can achieve with limited space. Now I can’t wait to watch my efforts come to fruition.
