Sunglasses in Winter - Why It’s Essential

- Written by Glenn Dunkerley from Blur Eyecare

Here we are in the gloominess of winter, so it’s not surprising many of us put away our sunglasses until the longer, sunnier days arrive. What you may not realise

is it’s just as important to protect your eyes in winter, sometimes even more so than in summer.

UV Radiation

Just like our skin, UV radiation can harm your eyes, and it is not just during the middle of the day in summer. While we may not feel them, UV exposure on the eye can sometimes be higher in the mornings and afternoons because of the angle of the sun in relation to the eyes.

UV radiation levels are three times higher during summer than in winter, but UV rays are around even in overcast wintery weather. In fact, winter snow reflects almost

80 percent of UV radiation. Damage can cause intense pain, discomfort and even temporary vision loss known as snow blindness.
