Sun and views mix with apartment lifestyle in downtown Mount

- By Jo Ferris

The heady rush of summer in downtown Mt Maunganui might have slowed down. Yet even as autumn wanes, the Mount is living up to its mantle of a year-round hive of activity. It’s a magnet. Mauao is the major attraction, of course. But however, the Mount regarded, people simply want to be here and savour the vibe. Whether it’s the surf beach on one side, the quiet swimming and fishing waters of Pilot Bay on the other, the obligatory walk around Mauao, soaking in the hot pools, or simply enjoying picnics or icecream – this inner sanctum draws people in.

This apartment has its own special magnetism. Thanks to its position within this complex, it commands a sunny outlook and interesting views to match. The best being the afternoon sun before it sets over the Kaimais. Balcony views shine down towards Mauao, but as the sun follows around over Mauao’s summit to the west, this balcony is a restful place to sit and toast it. Cruise ships might not have been here for a while, but they will return – eventually. In the meantime, there is other shipping to see docked at the port. At night, lights shine a different perspective on things. It’s a good place to be – out on this balcony. The master bedroom and living area both open outside to this sheltered corner. It’s arguably the nicest feature of this apartment, thanks to the privacy and different views. Contemporary styling is the other big feature here. The soft backdrop caters to any taste, while the subtle nods to Scandinavian influences can be seen in the light timber features. There’s the stacked shelving in the living area and bathrooms, interesting supports within the kitchen and the woodgrain flooring.

This apartment is essentially a two-bedroom unit, with a multipurpose side room off the living area. The cantilevered-styled delivery into the room makes it best suited to an office -as is currently shown. However, it could easily be used as a bedsit snug. A formal dining area, perhaps? A defined media den? It’s just nice having the choice. The mood throughout is lighthearted – smart finish taking kitchen cabinetry to full height to eliminate the dust trap, while providing good storage. Open shelving is handy, while the rangehood is out of sight – mercifully. Bar-stool corners sit either end of the island are another point of difference. Secure parking within the complex goes without saying; this apartment has two carparks plus a storage unit. But, given this location in downtown Mount, walking is the key factor here. Keep the cars parked up. Pull out the bike, or simply walk everywhere. This is in the heart of the action – beach, cycling and walking by day; bars, restaurants and movies at night. The timing seems right.
