Honouring New Zealand landscapes through architecture

- By Jo Ferris

Part of Papamoa’s waterway appeal focuses on the trails that weave past homes commanding a frontrow seat. In Palm Springs, Harwood Homes continues its design innovation - developing this exclusive enclave by the waterway. A multiple award winner in the Registered Master Builders’ House of the Year; Harwood’s entry this year has captured the interest of locals passing by. The second in a range from Harwood’s Aspiring collection in Palm Springs, the vision instils a twist on a coastal setting, by honouring New Zealand landscapes through architecture. JMAC Architecture curated the collection; designing this home specifically as the showcase pinnacle. It also marks the third relationship between Harwood and the home’s owner. Eager to be a part of this particular project, he was heavily involved with JMAC, Harwood’s entire team and Gael Garrett Design’s interior concept. Epitomising a distinctly New Zealand style, the home soars over two levels and features two, gabled wings in a nod to alpine peaks. The contrast of black, horizontal weatherboard and rumbled grey brickwork is enhanced by battens - overlaid vertically to instil texture and shadow inflections. White roofing inspires imagery of snow-capped alpine peaks, while full-height glazing defines the distinction. Fenced for privacy, extensive landscaping completes the picture with a blend of mature exotic and native trees that weave a path around the home. Its two-wing design embraces a garden courtyard with a pool and lounge patio to form an intimate connection outdoors. Family living and a guest suite open outside, while a gym and second lounge upstairs both offer a grandstand overview.

The lounge’s loggia also invites a sheltered place to gaze over the waterway; drinks served from the wet-bar entertainment feature. In the afternoon, the master suite and second bedroom cherish sunsets towards Papamoa Hills. Craftsmanship is showcased in every aspect. The tone is soft and subtle, yet unmistakably refined. Antique brass accents flow throughout – delicate threads that maintain continuity, while accentuating the detail of an aged look, but in a modern way. The kitchen’s bold design introduces exclusive colour from Dezignateck Thermoform’s latest collection and features a curved island bar. The distinctive look is complemented by marbled stone counters, satin brick-laid tiled splashbacks and the latest brass handles from Archant’s Fade collection. A subtle fluted finish on the glass cabinet is repeated in every bathroom. Following a similar theme with fluted elements and antique brass accents, bathrooms are all personalised for purpose. Naturally, the master ensuite is the most dramatic - with a stunning marbled-tile feature wall. Another dramatic effect showcases bespoke clay pendants in the foyer, stairwell and kitchen. Handcrafted in Spain, their sponge finish features pin-holes – striking by day, but a spectacular display each evening. Four bedrooms include an ensuite guest room with full-wall sliding door. The gym offers flexibility for another bedroom; an office houses technical equipment and the laundry is of a five-star hotel standard. Designed around family lifestyle and entertainment, everything emphasises respect for understated class, while showcasing the best that money can buy.
