History

1614 Indian Chief Powhatan’s daughter Pocahontas marries Englishman John Rolfe, a widower, in the Virginia Colony.

1887 In Alabama, teacher Anne Sullivan achieves a breakthrough as her 6-year-old deaf-blind pupil, Helen Keller, learns the meaning of the word “water” as spelled out in the Manual Alphabet.

1930 Mahatma Gandhi and thousands of followers reach the sea at Dandi and boil seawater to make illegal salt, marking the end of his famous 200 mile protest march against the widely hated British salt tax

2021 The Minneapolis police chief testifies that former officer Derek Chauvin has violated departmental policy in pressing his knee against George Floyd’s neck and keeping Floyd down after he had stopped breathing; the testimony comes on the sixth day of Chauvin’s murder trial. (Chauvin is convicted of murder and manslaughter.)
