THE SITUATION

HLA broad low is approachin­g from the Tasman Sea, and should be centred west of Buller at midnight tonight. The low is spreading frontal rain bands onto Aotearoa New Zealand. A strong warm north to northeaste­rly flow over the country, is turning strong cold southerly over the south of the South Island.

Today: Cloudy with drizzle, turning to patchy rain towards midday. Northeaste­rlies becoming strong in the morning.

Tomorrow: Rain with heavy falls, easing late. Fresh northerlie­s. Saturday: Showers, clearing in the evening but remaining cloudy. Westerlies developing in the morning.
