Hints of Italy embrace pizza and pool lifestyle in lush haven

- By Jo Ferris

Sitting within the tropical ambience of a ‘pizza pergola’ – gazing out over the pool to Tauranga Harbour and Kaimai Ranges beyond – it’s easy to imagine basking in a Mediterranean resort. Indeed, this Aongatete retreat has hosted guests in boutique accommodation to support the secluded lodge venue next door. The intimacy of what has been created here is extraordinary. The flow from inside to various outdoor places showcases the partnership between nature and indoor entertainment. Architectural skill instilled forethought and longevity into this home. Built in 1995, it transcends the decades and proves class remains timeless. There is a distinct Mediterranean influence throughout – hints of Italy, joined by Balinese touches and familiar aspects that are quintessentially kiwi. Two wings give a nod to a bird’s wings soaring raked ceilings enhancing space and glazing streaming in natural light and views. Sarked timber ceilings and Mediterranean-styled slab flooring blend natural appeal with enduring function. Rendered block adds that rustic touch of a country lodge, while features throughout highlight the finish and detail that makes this home so unique. The master retreat sits in one living wing to give privacy away from remaining bedrooms in the second wing. Hence the boutique BNB element. A clever upper zone is as comfortable as private workplace or bedroom retreat – complete with a balcony to elevate the views. Farmhouse appeal in the kitchen offers cooks a dream place to prepare and serve meals to three different areas. The bar-stool element is a natural drawcard where social occasions begin. From here, entertainment moves to formal dining and relaxation in spacious living areas either side, or a fantastic cushioned window seat, with its window link to the central courtyard outside. And it’s outside, where the romance blossoms. Either feasting on pizzas, lounging around the pool, or slipping out to a stoney pergola corner off the second lounge, this home embraces life, entertainment and nature. More than 4800 square metres of lush privacy hides from the world – yet connected by the scenery stretching out in front. Home to tui, fantails and a resident cock pheasant and kingfisher – birdsong and birdlife is abundant. Neighbouring vineyards enhance the scenic mood, hedging provides shelter, while palms sway in the breeze. Oranges and lemons fill the pantry and spice the tipples. A cherry tree fruits for Christmas banquets and some olives and a fig are added delights. Another bonus is the concealed, threebay shed - space to tinker, store classic vehicles, bikes and toys; while outdoor parking caters for the boat, motorhome and visitors. This is a gorgeous spot – a secluded peninsula in one of Western Bay’s prime horticultural areas – closer to Katikati than Tauranga – yet within easy reach of both. Near schooling, local eateries, golf and harbour activity – this is special.
