Volvo Penta IPS 10 years on

VOLVO PENTA HAS celebrated 10 years since the release of its game-changing Volvo Penta IPS (Inboard Performance System).

Volvo Penta IPS forward-facing, counterrotating propellers mounted at the forward end of the propulsion unit pull the boat rather than push it. Benefits of this high-efficiency system include low fuel consumption, low noise and vibration, comfortable ride, high speeds and excellent maneuverability.

IPS comes in a range of 10 models, from IPS350 to IPS1200, matched to three different pod sizes and available for twin, triple or quadruple installations in boats from 9 to 33 metres long. More than 16,000 units have been sold, featuring in around 1100 boat models worldwide.

Alongside joystick docking and driving, Volvo Penta IPS is now available with Electronic Vessel Control (EVC) options, including autopilot, cruise control and DPS. Volvo Penta’s Glass Cockpit system offers an enhanced overview and greater control of the engine and navigation.

The Volvo-penta IPS system will be on show at the 2015 Auckland On Water Boat Show, Viaduct Harbour Events Centre, September 24-27.

A NEW ICON sedan range of luxury motor yachts is close to hitting the market after Salthouse Next Generation Boats moved its manufacturing to Taiwan to allow a greater focus on designing and developing new products faster.

Owner Dean Salthouse says the first Corsair 44 is being built for a New Zealand owner in the Taiwan factory and he has personally been overseeing its construction.

“It’s an exciting time for our company. Handing over the building process to a highly experienced and well equipped production builder has let us dedicate ourselves fully to developing the new flagship Icon line, which promises the latest features at a competitive price,” he says. Production of the original Icon Sportsfisher flybridge models will continue. Kit Carlier and Donna Maree, formerly of Alloy Yachts, joined the Salthouse Next Generation team this year, providing enhanced interior design and CAD computer modeling.

New design features incorporated into the new 54ft to 70ft Icon Sedan range include: • the introduction of a full-width owner’s cabin amidships and optional four-cabin and three-cabin layouts • dinghy boot and hydraulic boarding platform • hull ports and window detailing in the hull for all forward cabins • conventional drive and IPS/ZEUS pod-drive options • gyro stabiliser • pillarless saloon door and window • retractable cockpit sun shade • cockpit table and seating.

Salthouse says customers are excited about the possibilities of a new range and business is booming.

“It was always our intention to develop a range of larger craft for our current owners to move up to. Since the move my phone has rung off the hook. Every secondhand Corsair Cabriolet has been snapped up. For example, I have just steamed the latest 49 back to New Zealand from Brisbane for a client who has just sold his Corsair Cabriolet 44 to upgrade to a 49 model.”

He says exceptional trade terms are a key selling point with buyers paying 25 per cent deposit on ordering their vessel, a second payment of 25 per cent on sea-trialling, with the balance paid prior to shipping. www.salthousecorsair.co.nz www.kitcarlierdesign.com
