SHAKE OUT THOSE SAILS
Labour Weekend sees the 36th edition of the New Zealand Multihull Yacht Club’s Great Race North and the organising committee has ambitious plans to attract more boats, first timers and a return of the smaller boats for the Auckland-to-russell event. Starting from 9:30am on Friday October 19, organisers are hoping to see some 200 boats participating in this legendary race.
“Last year we introduced a Cruising Rally division,” says Greer Houston, the Multihull Yacht Club’s Commodore, “and the feedback showed this was a loved addition to the race. We will expand on this to get more boaties involved.”
The Rally division opens the event to a new demographic of sailor. There’s no need to take the squabs off or get a PHRF handicap certificate and, if this is only sailing event you do, you may not need specific race insurance.
Starting one hour earlier than the racing yachts, the 36 Degrees Brokers Cruising Rally is a fun, group cruise and is ideal for production and cruising boats, families or those who aren’t hungry to cross the line first (though it seems there was a wee bit of friendly competition out there last year).
New and long-time participants are encouraged to attend the two race clinics (Sept 3 to Oct 15), and sign up to the PIC Coastal Classic Crew Finder Facebook group.
The event’s future outlook looks good, particularly thanks to PIC Insurance Brokers which has committed to three more years’ support. “We have a personal stake in seeing our local communities thrive, and especially the sailing community which we are close to,” says managing director Mike Garner.
