WHAT CAUSES THE MELTEMI?

Boating NZ - - Feature -

The Cyclades are sandwiched (permanently) between a high- and low-pressure system. They spawn the meltemi. The high (>1025) lies over the Balkan–hungary region, with the low (<1010) system over Turkey. The meltemi occurs mainly during the summer season and, depending of the factors influencing the two cells, it can howl for days (even weeks) at a time. Not much you can do but settle in with a good book.
