An upmarket resort in the Maldives has opened what is believed to be the world’s first undersea suite – the Muraka.

Part of the Conrad Maldives on the archipelago’s Rangali Island – Muraka offers extraordinary views of the Indian Ocean and sea life. Designed by the Crown Company architectural firm, it was built by Auckland’s M J Murphy Ltd, a company specialising in aquarium technology.

The suite is a two-deck design, with the lower deck sitting five metres beneath the waves. It has a kingsize bedroom, living space and bathroom and a spiral staircase leading to terra firma.

Chief designer Ahmeed Saleem says the suite was “driven by our inspiration to deliver innovative and transformative experiences to our global travelers. The world’s first undersea residence encourages guests to explore the Maldives from an entirely new perspective below the surface of the sea.”

And yes, it’s pricey – around NZ$76,000 a night. Stay awake to get your money’s worth… Visit www.conradmal for more information. Stay awake to get your money’s worth…

Even the bathroom offers Indian Ocean views.
