SUSTAINABLE MAPS

-

Making beautiful and affordable artwork that will be treasured by its owner, without negatively impacting the planet is the goal of Wellingtonbased studio The Furnace. Husband and wife team Aran and Maeve Pudney design and make high-quality 3D bamboo art maps depicting New Zealand’s topography. Their initial range of hydrographic maps has just been expanded to include iconic New Zealand mountains.

For Aran good design relates not only to the use and look of an item but also considers all aspects of how it is made – from selection of the materials, the processes

required to make those materials, how the item is assembled, and even how it is packaged and shipped. Sustainability is a huge part of this ‘cradle-to-grave’ approach.

The 3D art works are made of layers of bamboo ply in a timber frame, hand- painted using ecofriendly dyes and presented in an elegant eco- friendly gift box.

The maps depict different areas of New Zealand and, with the ability to add a custom message or mark a specific location on the map, the works become meaningful and personal to the owner. The maps come in a variety of sizes.
