Swedish engineers have built a foiling, electric-powered speedboat which they claim has the same speed and range as a traditional power boat. Powered by 44 kwh of lithium-ion batteries and a55kwmot or, the carboncon struct ed7.7mvess el–the Candela Seven – is designed for five people and has a top speed of 30 knots with a range of around 50 nautical miles. Front and rear foils are fully retractable for towing and storage, and the boat also has a special mode for running in shallow waters.

Candela Speed Boat AB was founded in 2014 and CEO Gustav Hasselskog says energy consumption is reduced by 75% compared to a conventional boat, allowing it to reach a range close to that of a fossil-fuel powered vessel.

The company already has orders for 150 boats. The first 10 are expected to be dispatched to clients in early 2019.

A Candela Seven will set you back around €170,000. www.candelaspeedboat.com
