What to wear for weddings

- By ANNEMARIE QUILL

Recently I attended a fabulous wedding.

At the event my friends and I remarked how lovely it was to see everyone dressed up for the occasion. It can be a dilemma deciding what to wear, so I asked a couture bridal designer for some tips. Trish Peng says one major etiquette rule is not to wear white.

“Let the bride shine on her big day.”

In fact, as a guest you can celebrate the day with colour, says Trish.

“A wedding is a celebration of love, so you can’t go wrong with the pretty, romantic looks. Think floral, flowy, lace, colour.”

“If no dress code is listed you can usually tell what the dress code will be based on the location. Beach weddings and vineyards tend to be cocktail attire or dressy casual, while black tie or ballroom weddings are more formal.”

Don’t forget that, like the bride, you will be on your feet a lot. Find out where the wedding is so you know what kind of heel to wear, as you don’t want to be sinking into sand or grass in a stiletto.

Designer Annah Stretton says it is important to think of the weather.

“You have the perfect dress, but it’s too light-weight and more appropriate for summer? Layer it with a jacket and maybe a warmer slip. And as the temperature warms you can shed the coat to show off your pretty dress.”
