Hunting for prizes at the Pongaroar
A wicked weekend of hunting — with people hunting as individuals or part of a team, is promised for the upcoming Pongaroar starting on April 14 to April 16.
Many local teams and hunters concentrate on taking a kid hunting.
“It’s about getting out there and enjoying the great outdoors,” says Pongaroa Hotel proprietor Gowan Greene. There are prizes up for grabs with lots of spot prizes.
The Pongaroar is into its seventh year, after hunting people got together in 2010, with the first hunt in 2011. With hunting competitions all around the country it was decided it would be a great thing to do in the Tararua District and Pongaroa. The hunt is sponsored by Pongaroa Hotel, Hunting & Fishing, Melodies New World, Outback Helicopters and Pongaroa Farm Centre. There is an open section, women’s section, junior section and Pongaroa Four — heaviest red stag, heaviest fallow, heaviest boar and best goat head.
Weigh-in is at the Pongaroa Hotel between 1pm-3pm Sunday April 16.
Entries close on Tuesday 11 April at 8pm and can be obtained by email from pongaroahotel@xtra.co.nz or phone 06 376 2864.
One of the highlights is a pig carrying competition. A great weekend is on offer, run by the Pongaroar Committee headed by locals Dave Kirk, Mike Hart and Adrian Wright.
