A quiet day at community market
Even though the Dannevirke Community Market was small on March 25, there were enough new stalls to make it worth a visit and regular stall holders diversify their products.
A steady crowd of regulars and the curious attended, despite the rain.
Busiest stall for much of the day was Fiona Kittow’s jewellery. For her first time at the market with her collection of jewellery made or modified from originals, Fiona was so busy she barely had time for an interview. From Levin, Fiona says she will have to work hard to repurpose other jewellery in time for the next market.
Kokonut Pacific soaps were sold for the first time by Jaz and partner David in an attempt to earn outer islanders in the Solomon Islands more return on coconuts. Poverty is rife, unemployment is 85 per cent and the couple feel this is a way to convert the copra into something more valuable.
Dannevirke High School’s KiO-Rahi Maori sports team beat 14 others in the Manawatu Regional Competition to make it to the national competition on April 18. While training to qualify was hard the students think raising the money to get to Auckland is harder. They had a cake stall to supplement their fundraising.

Regular stall holders could be excused for wondering if their monthly visits are worthwhile but some strike it lucky. John Robertson had a run on bird boxes (four sold) and boxes of wooden eggs made by the Menz Shed. Their red truck has found an owner.
Others like Joy Kopa of R3 Designs (rescue, repurpose and reuse) was philosophical.
“You just have to take the quiet days with the busy ones. They all even out,” she said.
