Swimming club recognises winners

- By ANDREW ARBUTHNOTT Pahiatua Swimming Club President/ Head Coach

This club has a long history and we all should be proud of having a swimming club in our little town. The opportunity for local swimmers being able to train and get to their best form for school swimming sports should always be available.

This year we had 22 children enrolled with Learn to Swim, down on previous years, and about 55 through swimming club. We had a senior squad with 16 swimmers.

Cooler weather meant we had only the most dedicated swimmers. Another positive difference from last year was having four pool-side coaches, meaning we could focus on individual swimmers to improve, streamlining, turns, starts and strokes through all buckets and the senior squad. We ran only one senior squad this year and this worked well, challenging the younger swimmers in the squad and pushing the older swimmers with healthy competition. We changed the buckets back into normal time of 5pm for Bucket 1 and 2 and 5.30pm for Bucket 3 and 4. By having a lane available in squads for Bucket 4, swimmers who wished to do more training could stay on.

This is my fifth year as president and head coach. I have a passion for swimming and love seeing young people enjoying the water, learning to swim and getting fit all at once. It’s great to have some other adult coaches with the same passion thoroughly enjoying coaching. Prizegiving winners: Under 16 Girls, Cornelius Cup — Sophie Oswald.
