Hawke’s Bay rugby came to Dannevirke in the school holidays on April 24 when current and potential Magpie players held a training session for 60 players.

It was a rugby promotion by Hawke’s Bay Rugby, with coaching sessions in Wairoa, Napier, Hastings, Waipukurau and Dannevirke.

Regional Development Officer Rugby Mason Emerson says it was awesome working with country kids, who listened. The focus was on fun while teaching the basics — catching, passing, tackling, winning the breakdown. Sessions focused on each skill interspersed with fun events like two-touch rugby.

“The big picture is kids enjoying rugby,” said Mason.

Dannevirke junior rugby got underway on May 5. There are three senior sides, four under 11years teams, seven midgets and eight rippers.

KEANU Kereru-Symes fresh from the champion Hastings Boys High School 1st XV last year, supervises some twotouch rugby with the juniors.

ELLERY Wilson and Mason Emerson cook up some sausages for the player’s lunch.

HB hooker Jacob Devry gets involved with the seniors.
