Tararua raises Relay cash

Bush Telegraph - - Property Market - By DAVE MURDOCH

Tararua lived up to the 2018 theme of Super Heroes at this year’s Manawatu¯ Relay For Life, contributing $20,526.50, close to the same amount as last year.

The total amount for Manawatu¯ was $335,000, slightly up on last year.

Tararua’s Cancer Society Field Officer Shirley Walker says she is extremely proud of the five teams which took part — Family Affair, Dannevirke Community Crew, Tararua College, Te Kete Hauora and Woodytawa. The Bush Walkers are partially a Pahiatua group but contribute to the Manawatu¯ District.

She said after two years of very testing weather Manawatu¯ put on a good 24 hours and the total income raised reflected that, despite fewer teams.

Manawatu¯ is the only one to still operate its Relay For Life over 24 hours, with other regions opting for 12 hours. While the night is always challenging, Shirley said she would hate to see Manawatu¯ drop to 12 hours as there is a great atmosphere created by going through the night.

Money raised in the Tararua and Manawatu¯ goes to supporting cancer research and support in the region and Shirley says each dollar raised is critical.

Family Affair, which raised over $6640 and won the prize for top Friends and Family group, has already started to plan for next year with a Dannevegas Casino Night at the Services and Citizens Club on July 21.

Banner flying, some of the top Tararua Friends and Family Group fundraisers Family Affair march on Saturday March 10.
