Galaxy of stars at Te Rehunga

- BY DAVE MURDOCH

The stars came out on a beautiful evening at Te Rehunga as Ruahine and Districts School took its guests on a cruise on Saturday June 9, the entertainmenta perennial favourite, Stars in

their Eyes .

The ship-decorated Te Rehunga Hall was full, with patrons dressed in their best ready to have a great night, matched by hosts in naval uniforms, grass skirts and leis. The cruise would be docking well after midnight.

Eight entries varied hugely in type but were all of top quality. Murray Lawson in black wig and shades did a good impression of Roy Orbison’s Pretty Woman to start the contest.

Just 16 and still at school, Brodi Walters imitated Beyonce’s Ave Maria, with a maturity of voice beyond her years and she was followed by her mum Leah Walters with a gender change copying Sir Mix-a Lot in both rap rhythms and movement. She won third place.

After a pause for $5 raffles Harriet Selfe sang Adele’s hit

“Someone Like You – her stage experience matching her voice.

Anne Kelly, fresh from babysitting a seven-week-old great grandchild sang Annie Crummer’s See What Love

Can Do and a trio of women finished the bracket as ABBA with a vigorous and popular rendition of Waterloo which earned them second place.

After another pause for a $10 raffle, and Moulin Rouge brought the house down with

Lady Marmalade, the two Walters joining with Anna and Ali Sinclair to put on the winning performance.

Regular performers Drew Caleno as Mick Jagger and Boz Charlton as David Bowie closed the show with Dancing in the Street — much to the delight of the audience.

A steady supply of nibbles and supper plus a busy bar kept the crowd in great spirits, compered by previous winner Nathan Davis.

A silent auction of All Black memorabilia yielded $388, with the proceeds and other raffles raising over $7000, justifying the Parents For Kids committee to resurrect the show after a year’s break.
