The Pahiatua Repertory Society’s Youth Theatre production of Starblaze is about to blast off!

The show opens on June 21 and the cast has been extremely busy learning script, songs and dance, so it can present theatre patrons with a well-polished and visually spectacular show.

The Starblaze Band, under the guidance of band leader and pianist Stephanie Whyte, consists of students from Tararua College in Pahiatua. With 16 musical numbers in the show they’re working hard to ensure the music is spoton.

“The cast and crew have devoted many hours to enhancing Starblaze,” says Ngaire Ngatuere, the show’s director. “It’s been a massive undertaking with a large array of song and dance routines, spectacular costumes and make-up, lighting, sound and projection. Backstage, we have a loyal team of parenthelpers minding the green room — another important job.”

Starblaze is a contemporary rock musical, set in the future.

It tells the story of a group of female freedom fighters on board the spaceship Vigilant.

After a space battle they capture the evil dictator Odium and his guards. However, with the assistance of the traitorous genius Dr Sneech, Odium captures the ship and forces it to land on the Planet Zodark. All the pirates are taken under guard to Zodark City except for Sandy, the daughter of the Captain, who manages to escape.

Alone and frightened in the outlands of Zodark she meets a young Zodark called Astro and after an initial period of mutual suspicion, the two become friends. What happens next is for audiences to experience.
