Gourmet pie makes it to the best in NZ

- By DAVE MURDOCH

When there are 5000-plus entries vying for the top awards in 13 categories at the Bakels NZ Supreme Awards the competition is pretty tough, but Sophaon Tun (known as Peter) of The Bake House in Dannevirke landed a Highly Commended in the Gourmet Meat Pie category on Thursday July 26 in Auckland.

His star pie was a mince, bacon and cheese combination, one of seven varieties he entered for this year’s competition.

Sophaon is no stranger to success, having won a number of awards starting with four in 2010 and a number of others since.

This was the first time Sophaon has entered for several years.

Pie making runs in the family and his brother Lee Ing took out the Supreme Pie award for his Gourmet Meat Pie in 2017.

Sophaon and his wife Sopeo Tek (Lisa), originally came from Cambodia in 1999, training and working in bakeries before setting up their own business in Taranaki in 2001.

They then moved to Dannevirke and set up Bake House four years ago and are running the successful business while raising two boys Jacob, 6, and Richie, 3.

Every pie in the Bake House is freshly baked each day.

Sophaon starts at 3am each morning, including weekends.

He has a wide selection of pies along with sandwiches, burgers, full meals, takeaways and coffee.

His shop is located at 83 High Street between WINZ and the ANZ.
