Give the yard a facelift this weekend

-

With spring just around the corner now is the perfect time to get out those gardening tools and give the yard a facelift!

Council is urging residents to trim overhanging trees and shrubs that encroach onto the footpath; these can cause problems for pedestrians or elderly on mobility scooters (sometimes resulting in them choosing the dangerous option of moving out onto the road because pavement space is taken up).

This is also a great time of year to clear away any excessive long grass before spring hits. Be a tidy Kiwi and make sure to pick up any clippings that fall onto the footpath.

A build-up of vegetation can be a major re hazard. You can keep yourself and your family safe from hazards like this by ensuring your grass and vegetation are at a manageable level before spring hits.

In some cases, property owners may receive a letter to notify them of overhanging/excess vegetation. Council bylaw states vegetation must not project more than 300mm from the boundary fence or below the height of 2.5m. If property owners have not acted, or made contact within two weeks of receiving a letter, contractors will be called in to remove the offending vegetation and the cost of doing so will be charged to the owner.
