Prepare pets for survival

-

We have all heard what we should have ready in the way of a disaster kit for ourselves and our families, but have you thought about what you need for pets?

Extreme weather and power outages aren’t uncommon so it’s important to be prepared. Get a pet survival kit together to ensure you are ready.

It should include a carry box /cages or lead/rope for transporting your pet. Have ready any vaccination, veterinary records, registration records, microchip details and photographs of your animals. Save this online as well.

The more common stuff as well — bedding, bottled water, food and water bowls, treats, plastic bags/doggie bags/gloves, a collar and large name tag with the animal’s name and owner’s address and telephone number.

Does your pet need medication? Please ensure this is ready to go along with a first-aid kit for animals and a basic animal first aid book. Have a list and be aware of pet-friendly safe houses — friends/family — or safe shelters such as kennels, catteries, pet-friendly hotels.
