Classic cars pay visit to Tararua

- By DAVE MURDOCH

Tararua turned on a mostly sunny day for visitors from the Central Hawkes Bay Classic Car Club on Sunday July 22.

It was the club’s monthly adventure, this time organised by Laurie Malcolmson of Dannevirke. The club chooses a different destination each monththat have included visits to Smedley Station and Pourere Beach for Christmas.

The tour left the Mangatera at 10.15 am and headed south turning at ringi to follow Graham Road to Woodville, to Ballance and Pahiatua where it visited Jim Chalmers who had five vintage Austins and an American V8 on display. Neighbour Jane Southey, 91, provided scones for morning tea before the tour enjoyed a kiwiana barbecue at the Mangatainoka Tui Brewery. Only one driver got lost butsome found the 10-question quiz a challenge. Laurie says the club has over 100 members, including a group from Tararua and he is keen for more members to join. To qualify you must have a car dating back to at least 1988.

The club meets every third Wednesday evening in Waipukurau with one meeting a year in Dannevirke, in September. It runs a trip every month with the next one a cancer fundraiser roughly coinciding with Daffodil Day.

Classic Car Clubsrun this fundraiser throughout New Zealand and CHB’s is on August 26 leaving Waipukurau Showgrounds from the Mitchell Street exit at 1pm following a car display.
