Squash women’s team win two tournament­s in a week

Dannevirke Women’s squash is on a high having won two tournament­s in a week.

In Whanganui at the Central Regions Inter-Club Division Two final the team beat Taihape 3-1 to capture the trophy.

This was the culminatio­n of 12 weeks of home-and-away matches.

Dannevirke was top qualifier by quite a few points and was pleased to win the final.

This is the third consecutiv­e year the team has won the tournament.

The team included coach Amanda Cunningham, Anna Rhodes, Natasha Peeti, Michelle Barber, Kaitlyn Holtham and Erana Peeti-Webber, Rebecca Hewitt and Wendy Stratford.

On Friday and Saturday Dannevirke women played in the Central Districts E-grade Women’s Super Tournament at Dannevirke beating both O¯ hakune and Kawaroa Park over the two days, 4-1 in games. This earned them the championsh­ip and the right to compete at the Nationals at Christchur­ch in September.

Meanwhile Tararua and Dannevirke mens’ teams competed against five other clubs for their Central Districts E-Grade Super Championsh­ips last weekend as well, playing over three days in a roundrobin.

The result came down to the last game on Sunday between Tararua and Ha¯ wera to decide the overall champion, Ha¯ wera winning the last game to clinch the match 3-2 and take the championsh­ip. Tararua was third and Dannevirke sixth.

Bryn Kerton of Kawaroa Park, New Plymouth, and Sean Edwards of Dannevirke fought out a tough game at the tournament, which was won by Bryn.
