From Your Mayor

-

Tena koutou s greetings to you all.

The Cancer Societyos Daffodil Day is upon us and itos a perfect opportunity to raise awareness of cancer which affects so many lives.

The official Daffodil Day is this Friday, 31 August, where street collectors, including myself, will be out in our towns and donations can be made.

Donations can also be made online for those who do not carry cash.

We have wonderful volunteers who raise funds, transport, visit and support people of all ages across the District.

Donations collected are to fund vital scientific research into the causes and treatment of all types of cancer, and the provision of support services and awareness campaigns.

Local designer Glenys Pryde of Woodville has designed crochet daffodil pins which she donates to and sells for the Cancer Society.

I have enjoyed purchasing and giving these as gifts each year.

This year, with the timing of the twin town signing and the opportunity to meet with the Prime Minister, one of these lovely crocheted daffodils was given to her from the Tararua District.

It is a timely reminder to support our local businesses who in turn generously give back to community fundraising initiatives.

Our businesses create local employment and opportunities and are imperative for our communities to thrive.

The recent closure of BNZ in Pahiatua will be keenly felt in our District and is a sign of the times that more people are using online services and carrying less cash.

Our thoughts are with the stressful time.

Noho ora mai s all the best, Tracey Collis
