Junior footballers show progress

- By TAMARA JONES Team manager

Dannevirke Junior Football club has a fresh crop of 13th grade representatives and they have played two games so far with good signs of progress.

On August 12 they took on the Feilding rep team in a hardfought game. It was the team’s first time playing together and Dannevirke dominated territory in the first half, keeping the ball near the opposition goal for most of the first half. Feilding took the win with a late second half goal to finish 3-2.

“It was a friendly game to help us work out what works for positions and combinations,” said Coach Donald Boulton. “We’re smoothing things out in preparation for the games ahead — a bit like plastering really.”

Donald has the bonus of help from Rangers’ team mates Daniel Sinclair and Anton Burn, who were part of the team which was runner-up in the Pelosi Knockout Cup the same weekend.

The team played its second game against a depleted DHS 2nd 11 as part of the annual Rafaelli Cup on Sunday August 19 at the Dannevirke A&P Showgrounds and won 2-1. It was a close game played in excellent conditions. The team hopes to squeeze in a few more games before a tournament at the end of the season.

Representatives for 2018 are: Eden and Taj Chapman-Peters, Tyla Doyle-Nikora, Brett Eastwood-Jones, Leon Finucane, Pirihera Henderson, Ryan Jameson, Taylor Jefferies, Aaron Kim, Josh Lane, Elijah Marsh, Leevi Tukaki, Jamaine Webber, Kaleb Withey.
