Banishing winter chill

- By DAVE MURDOCH

It might have been cold and drizzly outside the Dannevirke Services and Citizen’s Club on Sunday afternoon August 5 but inside the atmosphere was warm and happy as more than 100 senior citizens were entertained by Lions and friends in their annual Mid-winter Singalong.

This function has been running for over a decade and provide the elderly with something to look forward to in mid-winter.

Dannevirke Host Lions singers Lions Pride performed a repertoire of older songs loved by their audience providing a mix of sea shanties, national classics like Flower of Scotland and even a Cliff Richard bracket.

Highlight was L’s Belles — a group of women who sing twopart songs and fun items involving percussion instruments and costumes.

An award ceremony was held briefly to honour three Lions who gained pins and badges reflecting their membership of the Lloyd Morgan Trust. Lloyd Morgan is the only New Zealander to be Lions International President and his trust provides aid around the world and in New Zealand.

Dannevirke Host Lion’s annual donation this year entitled it to recognise three members of its club. District Governor Marianna DomperSchrijvers presented the awards to Alan Holmes, Bing Kendall and Mike Brock, who now works in Wellington.

The Dannevirke Services and Citizens Club provided afternoon tea, before a final half-hour of singing.

By 4pm the audience was wending its way home telling Lions how much they had enjoyed the afternoon.
