Tararua Over The Teacups

-

This year marks the 125th anniversary of womenos suffrage in New Zealand.

On the 19 September 1893 the Electoral Act was passed, giving all women in New Zealand the right to vote.

To celebrate this special occasion Tararua Mayor Tracey Collis and Councillors Alison Franklin, Shirley Hull, and Carole Isaacson are inviting people from throughout the district to join them for phigh teaq at their local libraries.

Called pTararua Over The Teacupsq the event is designed to acknowledge those women who courageously fought to give women something we now take for granteds the vote.

On Monday 17 September Mayor Tracey and Councillors Alison, Shirley, and Carole will be hosting this event at the Woodville Library from10.00am and Dannevirke Library from 1.30pm. On Tuesday 18 September the event will be held at the Eketahuna Library from 10.00am and Pahiatua Library from 1.30pm.

Mayor Tracey says, anyone who would like to join in the celebrations with them, and enjoy a rather special phigh teaq will be very welcome. The young people of Tararua havenot been forgotten in this yearos celebrations.

Mayor Tracey says its important young people know what these women went through and what they fought for.

pAll schools have been given the opportunity for their students to enter a couple of competitions. For older students there is an essay competition which will be about the suffrage movement and for younger children we have a poster colouring in competition.

pThis is all about the historic impact the work of the suffragette movement, and what they achieved has had, particularly on young women.q
