Host Woodville club wins both cups
It may be local knowledge or local skill and probably both but hosts Woodville took out both the Grinlington Challenge and the Byrne cups in the annual quadrangular tournament between Woodville, Pahiatua, Dannevirke and Ashhurst on Sunday, October 14.
Each club hosts the tournament in turn and Woodville was delighted to get the tournament completed given that Dannevirke’s tournament was washed out after one round in 2017 and Ashhurst was washed out on two days — the actual day and reserve day in 2016.
The tournament involves 10 players from each club, five juniors competing for the Grinlington Challenge Cup which dates back to 1906 and five seniors competing for the Byrne Cup, first played for in 1936.
The format has been changed from the original of singles, pairs and fours to a much more inclusive three rounds comprising:
Round 1: three ball pairs and two bowl triples;
Round 2: singles and five bowl fours;
Round 3: 2x4x2 pairs and three bowl triples.
Organiser Les Webster (vicepresident of Bowls Manawatu) was delighted to see a full turnout and the weather, although cold, at least dry. Given the recent rain the greens were understandably heavy but beautifully manicured.
Results: Grinlington Cup 1 Woodville, 2 Ashhurst, 3 Dannevirke, 4 Pahiatua.
Byrne Cup: 1 Woodville, 2 Pahiatua, 3 Dannevirke, 4 Ashhurst.
Competitive bowls will be busy before Christmas with the creation of the Tararua Quadrangular Tournament involving the same clubs starting October 27 and running fortnightly. This replaces the Bowls NZ Interclub Tournament which has been cancelled by the governing body. It involves pairs, triples and fours.
Bowls, like most sports, is struggling to recruit players. One player on Sunday commented, “We were five down and in one end we caught up — that’s the joy of bowls. It’s a pity so many are sitting at home and missing out on this experience.”
Dannevirke Bowls had its own success on October 13 when its team of Jim Harding, Eddie Warrington, George Withey and Grant Mainwaring won the Manawatu Classic Fours.
Grant Mainwaring of Dannevirke, well insulated against the cold, leads in the Byrne Cup.
Skip for Woodville, Judy Parker, measures to decide points against Pahiatua in the Grinlington Challenge Cup.
Barbara Pratt of Ashhurst bowls in her match against Woodville.
