Tararua’s Daffodil Day setting a record
With plenty of blooms and eventually sunny weather, Daffodil Day in the Tararua was bound to be successful, given the high levels of organisation the local Cancer Society demonstrates every year.
“It just rolls along each year,” says Shirley Walker, Field Officer for the Tararua Cancer Society. “Everyone knows their role and we just move from one fundraiser to another seamlessly,” she said.
Groups from Eketa¯ huna to Norsewood were out staffing stalls on August 31, schools were running competitions, chief sponsor ANZ Bank held a quiz night while the Dannevirke Chamber of Commerce galvanised shops to turn High Street yellow.
The total raised for Tararua was $22, 299, up on last year and a magnificent effort according to Shirley. She said all the money is spent in the Tararua and there is an increasing need for the society’s services so any extra funds will be well spent.
Glenys Pryde and Margaret Gainey got the collection rolling for Tararua selling raffles and flowers for Daffodil Day at the Woodville Races on August 9.
