Flotation bands now placed at Akitio Beach

Bush Telegraph - - FOCUS ON FARMING -

Rescue flotation bands are now available at Akitio

Beach for the public to use in an emergency.

Over recent years, the Akitio Beach community and ratepayers have been concerned at the lack of safety devices readily available at the beach, which is not controlled by lifesavers.

There has been one drowning, and a number of near misses, with the latest reported in the newspaper about 12 months ago.

Given the number of people visiting Akitio swimming or boating throughout the year and in particular during the summer months, the Ratepayers Committee voiced its concerns to the

Tararua District Council.

The Council has agreed to donate the flotation bands and has contributed to the costs of signs.

Tony Peeti Engineering made the two stainless steel boxes to house the lifesaving equipment.

Blast and Coat donated the paint, and painted the boxes.

Sign & Design Tararua supplied the signs at a discounted price.

Greatbatch Building Ltd installed the boxes and signs.

The flotation boxes are situated on both ends of the toilet block on the beachfront at Akitio Beach, so it would be easily accessible to all those who use the beach.
