Quilts of every kind at spring show

- By DAVE MURDOCH

With a membership of only nine, Dannevirke’s Cottage Quilters have worked hard to put on a display of quilts for the annual Spring Festival.

New president Barbara Christian is full of praise for her team of women who have put on the show.

Based in St Joseph’s School Hall there were quilts of every size, theme, colour and craft from hand- sewn to machine-sewn.

Visitors had a major challenge to pick their preference, particularly in the annual challenge which this year was to create a small item to reflect something in a magazine page which they were given.

Everyone had a different page and comparison was more complicated.

In the end Pam Smith’s zebra item won.

The idea came from a picture of a bookcase in the magazine page which had zebra boots.

She now has to make another because her two grandsons, Ben and Sam, both want one.

Long-time member Anne Ingram won the large quilt competition with a design that seemed to be expanding while Cynthia Irwin’s teddy bears with their cute facial expressions won the Small Quilt category.

Support for the quilters came from displays of materials by the Crafty Pear of Pahiatua and Krista Studios of Dannevirke, while the Dannevirke Spinners and Weavers Club put on a display of products and spinning.
