Once again we are heading into the {festive season|, that time of year when we look forward to holidays, long sunny days and spending time with friends and family.

-

Itos also the time of year when many of us will be heading away on holiday.

Unfortunately, while we look forward to this time of year it is not always a happy time for pets, many of which are forgotten or not thought of when plans are being made.

Animals are totally dependent on their owners when it comes to their care, and are unable to fend for themselves if left alone.

Dogs in particular can become highly stressed with a change in routine, or if left even for a few hours alone.

Each year we hear about dogs found wandering, or left tied up without access to food and water while their owners are away. No animal deserves to be treated like this.

While most owners love their pets and will do everything to ensure they are well cared for while they are away, sadly many donot, inflicting unnecessary suffering to those that they own.

If being left on their own is not bad enough, itos also a time of year when traditionally there are more parties, and fireworks can often be heard going off. For many pets this can be terrifying and is an additional stress they have to deal with. Thunderstorms are also more common at this time of year s again another source of fear. If you are home and hear either of these noises, please make sure your pets are indoors where they are safe until the noise has stopped.

If you are going away, book your dog into a boarding kennel, or have someone stay in your home to care for them. If you have a cat or other animals, donot think they can fend for themselves, make sure you have someone who can either be there with them while youore away, or who will call in and feed them each day.

Many people will take their dogs with them on holiday and this definitely helps ease any stress, but do remember to make sure your dog is registered and microchipped. If your dog gets lost and doesnot have a collar or tag on, there is no way of knowing who it belongs to and this makes reuniting it with its owner difficult, and sometimes impossible. A microchip ensures the owner can be found.
