Dannevirke High Dux follows in her sister’s footsteps

- By DAVE MURDOCH

Trudy Barrow was awarded Dux of Dannevirke High School on Friday evening December 7 , following in the footsteps of her sister Monique, two years before.

Before the Dux announcement, she had been awarded first place in Year 13 physics, chemistry, statistics and English while sharing first equal in biology.

She won the Hendy Prize for Practical Science, the JS Cusack Cup for Level 3 Physics, the Thomsen Cup for Level Three English, the National Bank Cup for Mathematics with Statistics and the Dannevirke Rotary Prize for Level Three Speech.

Trudy is the fourth in a large family living in the Kiritaki district, attending Ruahine Primary School before Dannevirke High School.

She was the Academic Prefect for 2018, responsible for motivating students to achieve their best, speaking at assembly using her skills in speech-making, which has won her awards at Dannevirke High School and participating in Lions International Young Speech Maker competitions.

“While her father Vaughan modestly claims her natural ability comes from something in the water out there, Trudy has developed the skills and attitude necessary to be successful at a very high level,” Deputy principal Diane Sandbrook says of Trudy.

“This is especially evident in her ability to reflect on and question her own understanding of the material she is studying.”

“Trudy has concentrated on the Sciences and is unsure of her future career focus.

“This is no surprise as her talents extend into the arts as well and so the world is her oyster. Trudy has always participated fully in the wider school life. She willingly supported the learning of others and has been a genuine role model for all.”

Trudy plans to explore her many options during a gap year overseas. She heads to Sydney in February to work in a

hostel which accommodates 100 students attending the University of New South Wales, hoping to gain practical experience. She will be there four weeks before flying to Jerusalem to work for an aunt for a month, then moving on to Rome for a fortnight-long Catholic Conference of university students before having a brief holiday in Spain, then return to the hostel in Sydney.

Trudy says she has thoroughly enjoyed her time at Dannevirke High School, especially the final year which combined fun with a lot of hard work.

She credits her teachers for their dedication to her learning and her parents for ensuring she had the time free at home to do her study.

Meanwhile she has already started to taste life beyond school, beginning a holiday job at Silver Fern Farms Takapau Works last Tuesday.
