Happy Birthday Tararua District!

-

2019 is the 30th Anniversary of Tararua District. In 1989 Central Government legislated a major overhaul of local bodies by the Local Government Commission, which did away with most single-purpose bodies, consolidating their powers into 86 new multi-purpose authorities.

While this was not an easy time for many of the preceding agencies, the nation-wide amalgamations could not be stopped and TARARUA DISTRICT was formed. The name was taken from the two ranges s pTaraq from the Tararua Ranges and pRuaq from the Ruahine Ranges. Since that time Tararua District Council has strived to not only serve the new district, but also to develop the districtos identity.

30 years on the Tararua District has much to be proud of.

We are a vibrant and proud district with diverse townships of character and community wealth. From the white kiwis of Pukaha Mount Bruce to the Trolls of Norsewood, our proud ranges crowned by the windmills to the picture perfect coasts of Akitio and Herbertville - across the region we embrace our identity with fervour and pride.

It is this identity that we celebrate this year. Tararua District Council has invited representatives from every community to work together on plans to ensure the entire district is involved in the 30th Anniversary celebrations. These celebrations will culminate in a weekend of events in early November to mark the inaugural meeting of Tararua District Council.

It is our hope that all communities within Tararua District will join with us this year to not only celebrate the past 30 years but also to look forward to the next 30.
