Fee increase for general refuse disposal from 1 February 2019
Refuse and rubbish that the public and contractors pay to leave at the District Transfer Stations, is trucked in bulk loads to an approved landfill site located in Central Hawkes Bay.
Central Government has recently increased landfill levies via the Emissions Trading Scheme, which directly affects the charges we must pay. The Landfill Operator has also increased their fees per tonne, to cover on-site operational costs that include staffing, equipment and monitoring.
Councillors discussed these impacts earlier in December, and subject to a resolution, will require staff to advertise that charges for general refuse at all Council transfer stations/landfills will increase from $140 per tonne to $170 per tonne, effective 1 February 2019.
The recommended increase will not impact recycling services, fees for green waste or fees for clean fill waste.
A further increase for general refuse is anticipated following the completion of Councilos 2019/20 Annual Plan in June 2019. This is to ensure that refuse is fully funded by user charges, as per the pricing strategy adopted in the 2018-2028 Long Term Plan. d d
