Cricketers win their first trophy

- By DAVE MURDOCH

For the first time in its history the Dannevirke Sports Club Senior Cricketers — playing in the Manawatu Premier Two Grade — has won a trophy.

Last Saturday, November 9 it won the Manawatu 20/20 competition, beating the other top qualifier Palmerston North Old Boys in the final at Ongley Park.

Batting first, Dannevirke compiled a handy 129 for eight wickets thanks to a 50 run stand between Andrew Galloway and Jamie Knightly for the eighth wicket when the team was teetering at 78/7 and seven overs to go.

Old Boys responded with 102 all out, thanks to a four wicket bag to Marcus Ingram and tight bowling all round.

Earlier that day Dannevirke had to finish the round against Palmerston North Boys High Second Eleven and it needed to win. Palmerston batted first scoring only 104 runs thanks in part to a hat-trick by Andrew Galloway.

Dannevirke responded by passing the total without losing a wicket, openers George Collin and Callum Poole seeing their side home comfortably.

On Saturday, November 16 the Manawatu 50 Over Competition started at Dannevirke, the locals playing their opponent in the 20/20 final Old Boys seeking revenge. The above pictures reflect the early action, Andrew Galloway dismissing one opener in his second over.

Unfortunately Old Boys did exact its revenge, going on to score 184 in its 50 overs before dismissing Dannevirke for 110. For Dannevirke Marcus Ingram took 4-22 and Andrew Galloway 3-30. The tail-enders again saved Dannevike’s blushes when batting, Andrew Galloway and

Logan Augustine putting on 60 runs for the seventh wicket after the top order failed.
