Rangatira ready for croquet season

- By SUE EMENY

Dannevirke’s Rangatira Croquet Club is all set for a busy season and is looking forward to welcoming new members.

The club opened its season recently and already has held two open days.

Dannevirke woman Geraldine Gould attended the first open day and was so taken with the game she couldn’t wait for Wednesday’s open day so she could have another go.

“I’m thoroughly enjoying it and it beats sitting at home watching TV,” she said.

The club has around 16 members with games played every Wednesday and Saturday between 1pm and 3pm.

Rangatira owns its own lawns.

Club secretary/treasurer Marie Power said everyone was welcome.

Club member and groundsman Ian Power, at the club to tutor new prospective new members, said croquet was a great game.

“It’s not strenuous and it’s a lot of fun. And players can be as competitive as they want. Anybody at anytime can come along.” Rangatira club takes part in an interclub competition with Rose Garden (Palmerston North), Levin, Whanganui and

Feilding on Thursdays, starting on October 24.

The first major tournament is the Central Veterans’ Championships from November 13 to 17, which attracts around 50 players from the Central region.

“It’s a popular tournament as players all like coming here because of the facilities,” said Marie.

Twilight golf croquet starts in January on Mondays starting at 5pm.

Ian said golf croquet had overtaken association croquet in popularity, as it was a faster game.

“You can play four games in two hours with golf croquet.”
