- Temporary Closure of Council Service Centres and Libraries

At council we have enjoyed the inductions for District councillors, community board members and Community committee members, with staff outlining their roles and their passion in delivering quality service to our residents. Unfortunately, I also learnt I had been recycling plastic which was not able to be recycled and will pay much closer attention from now on.

Only numbers 1, 2, 3 and 5 plastic types can be recycled s look for the recycling symbol, usually on the bottom of the container. These plastics could be shampoo/conditioner and household cleaner bottles, plastic milk bottles, soft drink bottles, yoghurt pots, margarine tubs and ice-cream containers.

It is a timely reminder to focus on placing the right materials in the bin. Having to sift rubbish placed in recycling is not pleasant and costs us all as ratepayers. As the cost of rubbish disposal continues to rise as a result of the increased waste levy, recycling all we can helps reduce our household costs. We send 263kg per person of waste to landfill in the Tararua District and New Zealand has the highest municipal waste in the OECD. We can do better and I know it requires a change of habit as I have made many a trip back to the car to get my reusable shopping bags.

As we head into the festive season, the pressure comes on for many families. It is a time when we are reminded to think of others. We have many wonderful voluntary organisations helping to plug the gaps in our communities and our local churches and foodbanks are always seeking supplies to meet the demand during this period. Donations of Christmas gifts are also being collected at local churches and foodbanks throughout the district to assist families struggling. The generosity of our communities is greatly appreciated and it is heartwarming to be able to show those in need that we care.

Noho ora mai, All the best
