Young cricket players join Hawke’s Bay camp

- By PAUL CHAPMAN Coach

This year the Dannevirke Sports Club sent a junior cricket team to the Hawke’s Bay Riverbend camp to compete in the year 8B section.

The team played on both grass and artificial wickets. The 8B section teams play one 35-over, three 30-over and a 50-over game. Their first game was against Waikato Valley North where Dannevirke batted first making 128 all out. Dannevirke managed the win by bowling them out for 120. Performances of the game were William Allomes 56 runs, Thomas Inder 2/9 (5 overs), Taj ChapmanPeters 2/7 (4 overs), Eden Chapman-Peters 2/12 (4 overs).

In the first 30-over game against Upper Hutt Dannevirke batted first making 8/155 then being run down with three balls to go, Hutt making 4/156. Players of note — Jordin Last-Harris 27 runs, William Allomes 26 runs.

The afternoon game was against Western Bay of Plenty and Dannevirke batted first making 7/226, restricting BOP to 4/168. There were more good performances by Thomas Inder 51 not out off 31 balls, William Allomes 37 off 20 balls, Jordin Last Harris 24 runs, Taj Chapman-Peters 1/9 (3 overs).

Day three a 50 over game was played, which is a big challenge for this age group to bat a full 50 overs on a grass wicket at one of Hawke’s Bay’s top grounds, Cornwall Park.

Facing Porirua City, a team which has been a rival over a number of years it was a game that everyone was looking forward to. For the fourth straight game Dannevirke batted first, batting out the 50 overs finishing with 7/177.

Porirua got off to a very good start but the Dannevirke bowlers stuck to it and managed to restrict them to 128 all out off 43.3 overs. Performances of note in this game were Jordin Last — Harris 56 runs, Eden Chapman-Peters 21 not out, Thomas Inder 3/7 (4 overs), William Allomes 3/17 (6 overs), Eden ChapmanPeters 2/17 (8 overs).

The last game of the tournament was played at Windsor Park against the undefeated Piako team. This was an extremely high scoring game with Piako smashing 270 off 30 overs then Dannevirke finishing up 213 all out in the 29th over. Good games by William Allomes 72 runs off 38 balls, Thomas Inder 30 runs off 19 balls, Taj Chapman-Peters 20 not out, William Allomes 3/21 (4 overs), Jordin

Last-Harris 2/24 (3 overs).

The camp was a huge success for the Dannevirke Sports Junior cricket team with all players and parents having a great time in Hawke’s Bay.

Dannevirke Sports Club junior cricket will be starting from Thursday 13 February at 5.15 pm. All welcome to come along and have a go at the Dannevirke Domain.
