Young teams working on their farming skills
AgriKids is a fun and innovative competition for primary school children aged eight to 13, testing their team work and problemsolving skills.
Students enter in teams of three, where they compete in eight different modules based on the primary sector.
Gumboot throwing, fencing, driving go-karts, sack racing and fitting chains on motorbikes are just some of the practical activities the teams have had to tackle in previous years.
Theoretical modules surrounding livestock breeding and genetics, farm safety and healthy soil have also been challenges for children to wrap their brains around.
The top seven teams will then go through to “the race-off”, competing in a time race, completing a set of challenges.
The top three teams on the day will be invited to the AgriKids Grand Final in
Christchurch in July, competing against 21 other teams from across the country.
The FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year contest is for high school students in Teen Ag Clubs where they compete in pairs at the East Coast Regional Final.
They’ll tackle eight theoretical and practical modules hosted by FMG YFOTY sponsors before the top five teams head into “the face-off” — a famous YFOTY buzzer styled quiz.
Modules could include: animal anatomy, fencing, meat cut I.D, gun safety, equine, agronomy, feed budgeting, chainsaw assembly and the list goes on.
The winning duo will be crowned East Coast FMG Junior Young Farmers of the Year and invited to compete at Grand Final along with second place.
The competition runs alongside the FMG Young Farmer of the Year contest at both regional final and grand final level.
Teen Ag Clubs aim to introduce teenagers to the agriculture, food and fibre sector — from farming and growing, to fishing and horticulture and everything else in between.
