Celebrating tamariki at Pahiatua Children’s Day

- By SHIRLEY JONES REAP Wairarapa

Come along and celebrate our wonderful children at this year’s Children’s Day / Te Ra¯ o Nga¯ Tamariki event on Sunday, March 1, 10am to 2pm. This year, the theme is Put Tamariki First. Now in its 11th year, the event is being held at the Pahiatua Stadium, and it is a chance to have some free fun as a wha¯ nau and put tamariki first.

Thanks to the generous support of sponsors and volunteers, there will be a variety of free activities, including bouncy castles, mini hotrods, a fire truck, a pre-school area, face painting, a clown, spin art, games, and so much more!

There’s also free tea and coffee for adults, so bring along your picnic blanket and lunch, and enjoy the games and entertainment spread across the stadium grounds.

The Pahiatua event is one of many organised all around the nation by local communities to mark National Children’s Day and celebrate how special and important our children are in our lives.

National Children’s Day is held on the first Sunday in March each year, and according to the official website, is “an opportunity for families, and communities to celebrate and nurture the children of New Zealand. The day is as much a celebration of children as an opportunity to engage all of New Zealand to think about their responsibility to support the lives of tamariki in their communities”.

By showing our tamariki aroha, by having ko¯ rero with them, and bringing together their loving and supportive wha¯ nau, we can all help our children thrive.

Look out for the children’s colouring in competition, which has been distributed through the schools, early childhood services and libraries. Drop entries to Paper Plus Select Pahiatua by February 28, and your tamariki will have a chance to win some fantastic prizes donated by Paper Plus. Winners will be displayed at the event.

This year’s organising committee, Bush Children’s Day Trust, are very grateful for the generous support and sponsorship of funds from the New Zealand Lottery Grants Board and Eastern and Central Community Trust, and for the services of The Trust, REAP Wairarapa, PAUA and many more who will be thanked post event.
